Why you can't just leave it

Problems of not cleaning your roof.

Honest truth from a bloke who's been on roofs for years: moss is a sponge. It soaks up British rain and holds it against your tiles around the clock. Every winter that trapped water freezes, expands and splits tiles from the inside out. Every summer the sun bakes the moss in and rots the felt underneath. Leave it long enough and a wash turns into a re-roof. We've seen it more times than we'd like.

  • Winter freeze-thaw splits your tiles — one bad frost can wreck a whole row overnight.
  • Lichen eats into the tile glaze. Once it's through, the tile is porous for life and rain seeps in.
  • Moss-clogged gutters back rainwater up under the roofline — damp walls, mould, rotten rafters follow.
  • Summer heat dries moss into a thick wet mat against the felt. That's how loft leaks and ceiling stains start.
  • Insurers love an excuse to refuse storm-damage claims on a roof that's been visibly neglected.
  • Mortgage surveyors flag mossy roofs and it can easily knock thousands off your sale price.

What comes off your roof

The stuff we strip — and how.

No mystery, no jargon for the sake of it. Here's exactly what's growing up there and what we do about it.

Common wall moss & cushion moss

The thick green tufts (Bryum, Grimmia, Hypnum) that grow between tile laps and trap water on the felt.

Crusty lichen patches

Those orange, white and grey rosettes (Xanthoria, Lecanora) bonded into the tile glaze. We lift them without scoring the tile.

Black streaks & roof algae

The long dark stains running down the slope — that's gloeocapsa magma algae feeding on the limestone in your tiles. Soft-wash biocide kills it at the root.

Red & green algae film

The faint reddish or green sheen on north-facing slopes. Looks like dirt, it isn't — it's living and it'll spread.

Bird mess, leaves & general grime

Rinsed off as we go. Tiles end up looking the colour they were when they left the factory.

Gutter sludge — vacuumed, not poked

We use a proper gutter vac (carbon-fibre poles, camera on the end) to suck out moss, leaves and silt from the ground. No ladders leaning on your fascias.

Common questions

Quick answers.

I've got a question — what's the easiest way to ask?

Honestly? Just pick up the phone. Ring 07577 006 225 and one of us will walk you through it — what's on your roof, what we'd do, how long it'd take, the lot. No script, no sales pitch, no being passed around a call centre. If we don't answer first time we're up a ladder somewhere — leave a message and we'll ring you back the same day.

What exactly do you remove from the roof?

Cushion moss and wall moss between the tiles, crusty lichen rosettes bonded into the glaze, black gloeocapsa algae streaks, red/green algae film on the shady side, bird mess, leaves, and gutter silt. Basically anything living or rotting up there comes off.

Will pressure washing damage my tiles?

Not the way we do it. We apply cleaning chemicals to loosen the heavy moss first, then soft-wash with a low-pressure biocide that kills spores at the root. Then apply the high-pressure jets without damaging tiles to get the final clean

How long does a typical job take?

Most semis and bungalows are done and dusted in a single day. We turn up around 8, work clean, sheet up your borders, and send before/after photos before we pack the van.

Do I need to be home while you work?

No need. As long as we can get to an outside tap and the roof, you can be at work or out for the day. We'll text when we arrive and when we're leaving.

What areas do you cover?

We will come to you — regardless. Mainly Essex and London, but we have teams that can travel to you. Please call and we'll let you know straight away.
